Coyote Gulch, Utah
Coyote Gulch is located in the Grand Staircase area of southern Utah. On the plateau where the car is parked, the gulch cannot be seen. Walk two-and-a-half miles north and you discover this deep gouge in the earth. The hike in the gulch (one way) is only six miles, but the short hike is packed with wonder. Arches, caves, waterfalls, petro glyphs, and spectacular cliffs are all found along the way. It doesn't have to rain much to create a flood. The waterfalls are all created by many flash floods. Water from Coyote Gulch flowing to the Escalante River is usually only ankle deep...that is until it rains. Then, it's over your knees or higher. I witnessed it.
It's pretty easy to get into the gulch but not real easy to get out. It is a scramble up a wall over one hundred feet to the desert plateau. It was a climb I'll never forget. Then, six miles through desert back to the car. It was all worth it. Check out http://www.redrockadventure.com/hiking/hiking_coyote_gulch.htm
